Wat Pho is the largest and oldest monastry in Bangkok and is home to more than 1,000 Buddha images, more than any other temple in the country.
Huge Chinese warrior statues guard the entrances to the temple. Even if there are 100 chedis or pagodas along the temple’s complex, four of which are especially dedicated to the first four Kings of the Chakri dynasty. These chedis have some of the ashes of the four kings from King Rama I to King Rama IV.

Phra Vihara of the Reclining Buddha
The Reclining Buddha is 46 meters long and 15 meters high.
The Reclining Buddha is located on the Northwest of Wat Pho and was built in 1832 during the reign of King Rama III.
His body is covered in gold plating and he is decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay on his eyes and the soles of his feet. The image was made to show the passing of Buddha from his final Nirvana after death.
The bottoms of the Buddha’s feet are intricately decorated with 108 auspicious scenes in Chinese and Indian styles.
Murals inside the temple shows scenes from as far as during the rule of King Rama III. These murals reflect the former lives of Buddha since Buddhism believes in reincarnation.
Bronze bowls are placed to hold the visitor’s coin donations.
