Who is While Travelling Blog?

Hey guys, I am Evrim Kanbur, a Turkish girl gone global. Lately people think that I am Italian because of my nose, Spanish because of my eyes and Latin because of ….hahaha anyway but here I am as an International Citizen haha. I am an entrepreneur; Economics, International Business and Psychology teacher; business development professional and travel blogger. I love travelling, running, taking photos & videos, cycling and camping…More than ever, I love following my dreams and I am willing to help you to follow yours too.

Evrim’s unexpected journey…How is everything started?

PAST IS PAST…

While I was studying at University, I worked as an intern for Is Portfolio, Istanbul Stock Exchange, Is Investment and Fitch Ratings…I loved every minute of my internships…every minute….I was learning, I was using what I was learning…I was growing, both personally and professionally…I am so lucky to have met many amazing people, they know themselves!

As soon I graduated, I started to work at Deloitte as an auditor, one of the big four consulting companies. After 3,5 years I turned into business development and worked as a business development manager for a local mobile payment firm and then Riot Games, one of the biggest computer games company in the world, found me and after 5 interviews I was offered to work as a business development manager , then got promoted to Payment Systems Turkey Country Manager!

This is a summary, I will write the details later for sure…but for now, I can say that this journey includes a lot of tears, life-long friends as well as fake friends, amazing managers and partners as well as terrible managers who tortured me…It involves amazing stories as well as getting sick, being burnt out and see people’s real faces…it took me up and down and up and down again and make me realize that I was so consumed by the system…I was ignoring my own world and I never figured out who I was…I was trying to chase someone else’s life style while I was ignoring my own life and my own path….I ignored what my ultimate goals were… Life was throwing bricks at my head to make me understand that I wasn’t following my own way…I was just resisting to open my eyes…I was suffering from the possibility blindness…I FORGOT TO FOCUS ON ME!

CHANGE WAS AHEAD

2013 was the year of change, year of decision and year of action…I have changed so much that when I look back I feel like “wauw”… Through years, the need of helping others was unresistable…I realized that our abilities and skills weren’t only to help ourselves, but we have those skills to help other people to rise and shine. I was always active back at school in terms of sports, but becoming a charity runner was a more fullfilling way that combines sports and charity on the same platform. I have been running for a good cause and raising funds to help children to get a better education and to help people who have spinal cord injuries, to get battery wheeled chairs. This was the first step of my evolution. As Jeremy Chin said:

The day I broke up with the normal was the first day of my magical life.

I was always ambitious about travelling but somehow I was holding myself back without being aware of it, hoping some day to make my dreams come true. I was finding myself looking at pictures of amazing places, reading inspirational quotes and real stories but there was something missing…”Action”…I was only dreaming, but not acting upon them. Is it familiar to you too? It was the time when there was no way to pretend not to hear that voice any more…That inner, lonely voice screaming with all its lungs, trying to breath, trying to shake me and to break the walls once I built around it…Eventually, I stopped resisting to change, which is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.

WHERE AM I RIGHT NOW?

sh-me

PRESENT IS WHERE WE WORK ON OURSELVES

In 2013 February, I gave a difficult decision…the decision of going away…a way that is very different from the traditional way of life…It was and still is difficult cause I was gonna be and I am away from my mom, family…but without sacrifices, without stepping out of your comfort zone, growth won’t happen!

My life has changed for good when I accepted the offer to teach Economics, International Business in Shanghai. My expat life has begun in Shanghai, China since August 22nd, 2013.

I started to learn Chinese, I started to learn how to eat with chop sticks, I started to learn kung fu, I started to stand on my feet in a foreign country, I flew to Hong Kong in a business class thanks to a mistake of an airlines company haha, I have become an entrepreneur, I started to learn to believe in me eventhough nobody believed in me…I started to feel free, spiritually and pyhsically…

THE POWER OF “I AM”

WHAT MATTERS IS HOW WE ANSWER THIS SIMPLE QUESTION: “WHO I AM?”

I believe that I am different, I am beautiful, I am amazing, I am valuable, I am a masterpiece…I carry myself like a queen, not in a pride, not with being better than somebody else but with a quite confidence…cause I know that I have something great to offer to this universe… When you have the right “I AM”, you invite the goodness of this universe into your life…Words are like electricity…When you use them the right way, they can give us all kind of goodness like light…if you use it in a bad way, it can kill you…It is up to you to chose who you are!

I am an entrepreneur…I am building my own business to be able to manage my own time, to be able to fly and be with my mom on her birthday and take her around the world, to be able to make a difference in this life, to be able to tell amazing stories to my kids and grandkids in the future, to be able to create a better work environment, share the resources with our community, and contribute to make the world a better place to live in…This is my passion, when you do what you do with passion, with all your heart, people will start to realize…In 2015 ICS TV(China’s English TV) and Shanghai Daily Newspaper selected me in top 10 change maker and influencial foreigner and nominated me to International Excellence Awards…that kind of a passion I am talking about! I will write more about being an entrepreneur later. I work 19 hours a day, some of you might say “whaaatt”, but I don’t feel it as an obligation, I love what I do…This kind of a passion I am talking about…

I am a teacher…I am teaching Economics, International Business and Psychology to touch young minds’ lives, to give them the tools they need to give better decisions…I love to influence lives of different cultures…I tell them that I am a kind of teacher that they are not used to see around cause I come here to make a difference, not to be another boring professor…You know what is happening now? My graduate students sending me messages from all over the world saying “thank you” and “finally we’re living your the life you have!”, they come and visit me, my other teacher friends go and take on volunteer jobs…Some teachers know  what it means to teach 30 hours a week, it is not easy but it is wort h it…I am grateful to be in this position!

I am a traveller…I realized what I want and how bad I want it…Travelling, but not only travelling, also exploring different cultures, meeting locals as they go about their daily lives and listen to their inspirational stories, experiencing the life as an expat. These invaluable memories are the ones that make people’s lives amazing. I travel solo but meet tones of amazing people, get to have amazing experiences, and have the chance to have new eyes to look at my life and the world…That’s why I found “While Travelling Blog” where I write both in English and Turkish.

Why, how, what I do on While Travelling Blog…

I’ve found “While Travelling” Blog to spread the idea of travelling by sharing my experiences, because I belive that travelling has a magical affect on lives and it can change everyone for good. I hope to help you by adding value to your life while travelling and inspiring you to see the world and create awareness by changing lives all around the world all together.

    Hi Evrim,

I am not sure how i stumbled upon your blog but great thing i did, very interesting specially the part about finding an apartment. The funny thing is while you were doing that half way round the earth i did my own version of finding the apartment in your country yes Turkey Istanbul to be exact. well i had all the help i needed as I am here on a company business and I was just acting like a spoiled brat. But I am not sure how i would have done it like you being totally on my own.

Best of luck on your travel. Very soon I will embark upon my own independent journey to another unknown part of the world, for me at least, So your story will definitely keep me inspired.

    Best Wishes
    Mujtaba

    • Hello Mujtaba, it is great to hear from you. I am really happy that you have found my blog. Hope Istanbul treats you good and you’re having fun. Yeah, finding a house is a big deal when you’re abroad. I am glad that you had support on this important step. Yeah, but you know what, all these things teach you a lot of staff that you will use when it is needed. Ohh I am already excited about your journey. We have a better, stronger and deeper understanding of our presence in life and how life is actually working while travelling. Keep in touch, be inspired and spread out the idea of adding value to lives and create awareness while travelling.
      All the best,
      Evrim

  • Selam Evrim,
