Chatuchak Market, the endless market of Bangkok
The first day in Bangkok
After I took a nap for an hour or so in my room, I woke up feeling ready to start exploring the city…That was weird that I didn’t even wanna rest at all…I think Bangkok was getting under my skin…That was a good sign as I needed to take tones of pictures…Hope you don’t see me turning into a zombie at the end of the journey, haha… Alright, let’s get ready and meet up with my friends: Tararat who is a lovely Thai girl and Piyush who is a very kind man from India. Both of them has a great sense of humor which made my trip in Bangkok so much fun.
In this article you’re gonna find:
- Wat Mahabut Temple, A famous story of a Thai Ghost
- Lunch at Cheevaji Macro Biotic Vegetarian Restaurant
- Chatuchak Market, literally the endless market in Bangkok
- One of the protest areas in Bangkok
- Dinner at a street food stall near Golden Mountain
- The people seen along the way
And finally we’re out in the Bangkok streets!!!
We took the SKY Train which is the spine of Bangkok Transportation. From the screen, you can select which station to go and it tells you how much it costs. It’s really that easy. The security guys and ladies were really helpful. One thing I noticed was how motivated they were. They weren’t just standing there like scracrows, they actually had responsibilities that’s why most of them were looking confident and satisfied by what they do. You know the feeling of being useful is one of the key factors that make you feel alive.
Here you can see the typical Bangkok traffic that was seen from the top of the SKY Train.
Who was hungry? Me!!! Here were two different chick pea dishes. I think the one at the bottom should be more spicy than the other one. I just took a photo of it, not ready to try the street food yet.
The little kid was helping his dad with selling the street food. Good boy, hope you’ll be healthy, happy, achieve everything you want, be kind to people and travel around the world.
“Watch out monks are coming! “
Can you see the woman behing them? Looks like she was in a hurry!
Wat Mahabut Temple, A famous story of a Thai Ghost
Wat Mahabut which is located in Phra Khanong in eastern Bangkok is one of the 887 temples in Bangkok. So, what is Wat Mahabut Temple famous for? Neither for its historical legacy nor its ancient architecture…It is famous for a female ghost called Mae Nak…Because of this ghost, this temple is also called Wat Mae Nak Phra Khanong.
According to the legend, Mae Nak was married a handsome guy called Mak. Because of the war in those times, Mak was conscripted for military service. When he was at war, Mae Nak and her unborn child died when she was giving a birth. Their bodies were buried by the neighbors. When Mak came back home from war, he found his wife and baby boy waiting for him. He had no idea what happened till his neighbors told him.
Mak run away and his wife tried to catch him. Mak was hiding in Wat Mahabut Temple but after a while she found him there too. There are a lot of versions of this legend but the most common one is Mae Nak was exorcised to return to the other world. In summary, what happened was the romance turned into a horror story.
Spirits, ghosts…These stories make me freak out . It’s like the same with “I like watching horror movies but I am also scared to death while doing that”…An interesting contrast.
Did you notice a picture in front of the temple?
Let me give you a bigger perspective…What about now? Yeah, here it is. A photo of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand. Most of the places in Thailand have his photo on their walls. Local people love their king and his photo is one of the important things in their houses. I saw a picture of him holding his camera. This was the one I like the most.
The mother and daughter enjoying their bicycle ride…In Asian countries, it is so common to see a lot of bicycles and scooters, more over a lot of people on a single bicycle or scooter. That’s hilarious!
The entrance of Wat Mahabut Temple…
Inside Wat Mahabut Temple…
“Ohh let’s catch the monks!” and we started to walk really fast to catch them…
And here you go…Tararat, my friend, helped me to talk with them but they were also able to speak English at some point. The monk at the back was the master, he graduated from his PHD program and the monk in the front was his student… I asked them how they decided to become a monk…The master said he wanted to be a monk with his own will and his student said his mother thought that it would have been a good thing and since the age of 14 he was being educated to be a monk…
We said “Kap kun kah” means thank you and kept going…
People seen along the way…2 girls took a mototaxi…The lady in red lipstick is my favourite! Look at her! Doesn’t she look so lively?
Lunch at Cheevaji Macro Biotic Vegetarian Restaurant
When you can’t eat pork, the choices are pretty much limited with noodle or some really spicy food in Asia…As Piyush is vegetarian, we tried an amazing vegetarian restaurant called Cheevaji Macro Biotic Vegetarian Restaurant
Here is the menu…
What do you think about the juice? It tasted amazing!
Here is one of the dishes we ordered…Tararat showed me how to eat it…
And the other amazing vegetable dishes…
After this great lunch, we were off to Chatuchak Market which is known as the endless market of Bangkok…
Finally I saw a Turkish restaurant….
We were on the SKY Train again…Let’s have a look at the people in the metro…
Here was the main protest area at Victory Monument. Can you see the hundreds of tents?
The roofs of one of the sections of Chatuchak Market…That’s crazy, that’s huge, that deserves a “wauw”…
Look at the beautiful flowers…
We got off at Mo Chik Station of SKY Train…I think if you just follow the crowd, it will take you to the market…
The park we passed through to arrive Chatuchak Market…Green areas are really important here…People were resting under the shade…When the weather is that hot, wearing skinny jeans would not be a smart choice or you’ll get the heat rash.
Thailand is famous for its street food…Loved the colors…
Here is the “bang man” selling fruits…”Show me your best move” and here it is: “bang”
Chatuchak Market, literally the endless market
We were literally in the Chatuchak Market…This market is open only at the weekends and a must-seen place as it is the biggest one in Bangkok. You’re gonna see a diverse collection of merchandise here that can make you shop till you don’t have any energy to walk further.
Let’s start guys!
“Yeah, it looks good on you.”
My thing is anything with eye-catching colors….I won’t miss a thing in those colors…
There are more than 8,000 market stalls at Chatuchak Market. Scarves and fabrics are really popular here…
“I want my shoes without pon pons please.”…What about a converse bag? Interesting…
Love these owls and aliens….On a typical weekend this market welcomes more than 200,000 visitors.
You’re gonna get lost if you go there alone…But there is system to help you findyour way through the market.
There is a main street which branches into many narrow streets. These narrow streets are grouped into sections, in total there are 27 sections.
- Clothing & Accessories (sections 2-6, 10-26)
- Handicrafts (sections 8-11)
- Ceramics (sections 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 25)
- Furniture and Home Decoration (sections 1,3,4,7,8)
- Food and Beverage (sections 2, 3, 4, 23, 24, 26, 27)
- Plants and Gardening tools (sections 3, 4)
- Art and Gallery (section 7)

- Books (sections 1, 27)
- Antiques and Collectibles (sections 1, 26)
- Miscellaneous and Used Clothing (sections 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 22, 25, 26)
There is nothing that you can’t find in this market. You can even find these stuff
Interesting…
Scarves in many colors…
Yeah, now you got my attention…They look amazing!
Seriously? Who wants this!
Even these…Man!
I’ve never seen these handcrafts done by a man…Looks good…
Fake fruits…Colors got my attention!

Elephants made of crystal…
These look interesting…
Candles in every color you can imagine…
Do you want one?
Ok, finally I feel like I want one of these below…
You’ll see these in Thailand everywhere…
We were in the fake flower heaven…
I love teh colors…
Do you need one? Nahhh
It looked yummy!
Ups! I literally don’t see these “no photo” warnings…
What about these? Hmmm, maybe later…
Choconana tasted amazing! It is banana + chocolate + hazelnut or peanuts and more…
Nice hair man…Colors haha
Another interesting hair style…
I loved these icecreams…They looked so cute!!!
What about Thai Ice? Well, I prefer the ones above…Of course, the price differs a lot…
Welcome to the strawberry festival…
As I kept eating all the sweet things, I was getting hungry quite often and I really needed to eat someting proper, instead of deserts…I should have brought my cheese and bread, haha kidding.
You love eggs and you have no idea how to cook them all at once, right?…Here is a great tool for you…I want one too, unfortunately they were selling the eggs not the tool…hmm let’s call it “super-egg-cooking machine”
Yeah, here was my stall..Egzotic fruits…..
These ones look really good!
Ohh come on! Ok, let’s accept, in this market the powerful ones are not the customers. If you are here, you have wait!
You can find interesting t-shirts with all kind of messages..Some of them are hilarious!
You can combine the t-shirts above with the hats belove…
Love the outfits below! But I won’t wear a real one… Don’t forget to bring enough cash with you cause not all the stores accept credit cards. This was the only one with the Visa sticker on the window.
I loved these confused looking owl bags!
After seeing all these stuff, it was high time to try something on…It looks huge on me…Tararat is trying earings…Wauw there are thousands of different earing models…
Forget about the plants, I need that right now!
A fun art gallery in Chatuchak Market…I love to paint but I just don’t have time….I had an art teacher when I was in the secondary school. She was literally torturing me during the lesson. I remember that even the way she was saying “great” was like a slap in the face…I don’t know what she is doing right now but I still love arts and hope she is ok…
The crowd in Chatucha Market…
Street musicians…Sorry to see these kids standing there for the whole day…
Can you think of a market without a Thai massage in Thailand? Impossible, you can find them everywhere…
While Tararat and Piyush were buying some plants, I took a photo of some interesting and beautiful ones…
The place called “Eat guys, we’ll clean the dishes later” haha…
You can spend a day here at Chatuchak Market…I mean I can’t believe how big this place is and the things you can find…For girls never ever wear skinny jeans here, you’ll feel really uncomfortable when the weather is really hot. Try wearing shorts, dresses, skirts…Plus wear sneakers/trainers or comfortable flip-flops as you have a long way to walk…Be aware of any pick-pocketing activities…
You know what? I really don’t shop at all unless I see something that I really like…At Chatuchak Market I only bought a big yellow bag which I still use.
Alright, it was time to try some street food…
Walking on the dark streets in Bangkok…
One of the protest areas in Bangkok
While we were on our way to have dinner, we passed through one of the protest areas…This reminded me off Gezi Park protests in Istanbul-Turkey, except here there were no gas bombs in the air…People were quite calm here…The protests were called “Shutdown Bangkok”…I will write more about it in an other article once I hit the main protest area…
It is really important and a privilege to witness the things which the history will write about…Yes, it is really important to consider the security issues but you need to be able to observe the things written in the media…Most of them were exaggerating the situation in Bangkok…
Most of the protest areas were isolated from the traffic with tyres…
The house of the spirits… We were almost getting to the area where we had our dinner.
Dinner at a street food stall near Golden Mountain
Do you know that when you see a sliced fruit like that, the possibility of eating it – even though you’re not hungry – is much higher than when you see it as a whole fruit?
Vendors selling food…
For starters, I got this…It was made of rice flour and red beans inside…We have it a lot in China…This one tasted good…Kind of a little bit sweet and sticky…
What about these? Not really…
Ok, we were getting this one…Pad Thai, Thailand’s national food…
First we needed to find a place to sit…Padthai tasted soooooo goood! Oh no, spicy! Well, my body reacts to spicy food by giving me a running nose and teary eyes…So I needed a lot of napkins…Besides, doing some people watching here was so fun!
The food was amazing and we were all full and tired so it was time to go home, I mean my hostel haha…
Tuk tuks in Thailand are amazing! Once they start going really fast, you feel like any minute you can fly on to a car or into a store but somehow fortunately you don’t…Wait, what is this sign? OMG, this is hilarious! He must have suffered a lot from this, haha! Well, if everyone eats that spicy, that’s what’s gonna happen…It’s a fact…
A tuk-tuk selfie…
My whole day “photo mode” as seen in the mirrors…..
I hit another protest area which was way more crowded than the first one…
The final picture of the day in the metro station, especially me desperately needed to rest…
It was amazing to hangout with these guys while exploring Bangkok…I was even more curious for the next days but first I needed to have a good night sleep. If you haven’t seen where I stayed at, take a look at my home in Bangkok and See you in the next article which is about exploring Bangkok’s canals!
