I have to say this first, I am not a coffee person but the famous Vietnamese iced coffee, Ca Phe Sua Da has a different place in my heart and in my stomach:) I’ve gone from no coffee to 3 times Ca Phe Sua Da per day in Vietnam, I just love it!

My motto in the mornings in Vietnam

What makes Ca Phe Sua Da that special for me as well as for many other travellers?

Experiencing local tastes is extremely important when we travel to different countries. Vietnam has various coffees but this one, specifically when condensed milk meets with local coffee…it leaves a sweet taste in your mouth…when you drink it cold, the sweetness is magnified…that’s what attracts me…it is not like hot chocolate but it is not like dark coffee…you should absolutley try…

It comes to the table like the first picture below. It is served with ice ginger or jasmine tea based on your choice. Second picture is the ready to drink Ca Phe Sua Da.

Making Vietnamese coffee, Ca Phe Sua Da

It all takes 10 minutes and you’ll have your Ca Phe Sua Da ready:) To prepare for 2 people, you will need:

Ingredients:

Vietnamese coffee filter ( the aliminium cup you can see in the first picture above is a filter)
3 tablespoons dark roast coffee, freshly ground
¼ cup sweetened condensed milk
1 cup water, almost boiling water
2 cups crushed ice (or ice cubes)

Action:

1-) First, pour the sweetened condensed milk into the bottom of a cup.

2-) To brew, pour a tiny bit of water in the filter just to wet the grind and to let the grind expand a bit. Also this will help rid of some small grinds that happen to make it through the filter. You can toss it out if you see any.

3-) Then go ahead and fill the filter all the way and let it drip. Ideal brewing time comes to about 3 to 5 minutes so adjust the filter accordingly. Too loose and you’ll just have runny brown water. Too tight and nothing will drip through. The filter will be hot, so use a fork or another utensil to adjust the filter. Place the cap on and watch the coffee drip!

4-) Stir well the condensed mmilk and coffee using a long-stemmed spoon. Make sure the condensed milk is dissolved.

5-) Pour the brew into a long glass filled with ice and serve.

You can see how much I liked it from the table below:)
