My home in Bangkok, Chan Cha La 99 Hostel

When I was searching on the internet for a place to stay in Bangkok, my friend Tararat recommended me this hostel. Chan Cha La 99 Hostel was my home for the next 7 days in Bangkok. I loved this place! As soon as you step in the hostel, you’ll feel the warm atmosphere around you, like a home cause it is used to be a house.

Let me give you a tour in the hostel…Afterwards we’re gonna talk with Annie, the owner of the hostel. She is such a lovely lady.

After arriving at the hostel, I dropped my bag in the hall and took off my shoes like the others. You need to take off your shoes in most of the places in Thailand to show your respect to the place and the spirits protecting the place according to the belief of Thai people!  “Spirits??? Ok, you don’t need to be afraid”, Ohh don’t get me wrong! I wasn’t telling you, I was trying to convince myself  that it was all ok haha, just kidding. I loved those owl shaped bonus-headed flower pots.

Here is the kitchen full of food and white goods and you can use them by following some simple rules like not eating the whole bread all at once, leaving the door of the refregirator open or leaving your dishes in the sink.

The windows are looking so cute…As you can see in the corner, there is a little house next to the ventilator and the bookshelf. Annie always puts some food in front of this little house to show her respect to the spirits. The notice board was full of  “thank you” notes to Annie for the great service.

The female dorm room I was gonna stay at…It was really clean and the sheets were smelling good! And you have your locker in the room as well. Here, I was gonna stay on the top bunk of the bunk bed close to the door.

You have your shared bathroom and showers which were always clean.

 Why you need to stay at a dorm room while you’re backpacking?

Because it is a GREAT way to meet new people who are also travelling and experiencing new cultures like you…I met so many nice people in the hostel. I stayed with two Dutch girls, one of them was a boxer! A female boxer! So cool! You know that Thailand is famous for its boxing events and boxers all around the world are coming here! After they left, I stayed with a girl  from Taiwan and she was really kind and friendly. Besides, I met a guy who is a lawyer, travelling in the SouthEast Asia carrying a lot of books with him but no computer or smartphone in order to isolate himself from the cyber world for a while.

Moreoever, I met an A-MA-ZING couple in the hostel. Marjo de Vos, the lovely lady in yellow t-shirt and his husband Theo de Vos. They have such a lovely energy! They did backpacking in India and travelled to many places. It is so great to see other travellers sharing the same passion you have.

After I decided to stay one more day in Bangkok, I learnt that the female dorm room wasn’t available so I stayed at this private room. It has a minimalist design which makes the room look bigger.

Annie, The owner of Chan Cha La 99 Hostel

 Here is Annie, the owner of Chan Cla La 99 Hostel! She is such a lovely person! I was wondering her journey as an an entrepreneur  so I asked her about her transformation….I love to listen to these stories…She was working in the IT sector and after a while she quit her job and spent a year in Australia observing other hostels. When she came back, she talked with her parents to turn this house into a hostel. Her parents also live with her in the hostel. They are lovely like their daughter. I saw them reading their newspapers and smiling at travellers staying in the hostel.

Annie is taking care of everything in the hostel and makes sure that her guests are happy while staying in the hostel.  She works really hard and never loses her sincere smile on her face. She also provides you the map of Bangkok and info about where to go and what to do in the city.  She even introduced me to a Chinese group staying in the hostel when she learnt that I and they were gonna go to Ayutya, a must seen place outside of Bangkok which I’ll be writing about it soon.  She goes on a two week vacation once in a year , so the hostel is closed during these two weeks.

I paid 2,100 Baht for 6 nights at the female dorm room, including breakfast and I paid another 341 Baht for the private room. The hostel is really close to Bang Chak BTS metro station which was really great.

As you can see from the pictures, I was really happy staying there. So, I strongly recommend Chan Cha La 99 hostel when you want a place to stay in Bangkok.
